The design is from Plum Pudding Needlearts and you can see them on Page 8 of their website under counted cross stitch. I fell in love with this chart as soon as I saw it, and thought the candy canes would be a cute design for the swap on my homemaking list. I'm going to make the bird ornaments to go along with some "bird theme" gifts for a couple of cousins and friends. Of course, I'm making at least one of each of the three designs for us, as well as the larger Season's Greeting design.
These ornaments really stitched up quickly. I found I could easily do 1 or 1-1/2 a night while watching basketball games (my daughter and I are huge NBA fans). The border was nice because after doing the first one, I realized I didn't have to think much, lol. Then with using just one color (GAST Cranberry) it takes away even more of the thinking process (knowing you don't have to change colors). I admit it... I like things simple sometimes :) I had to pay a little more attention when doing the candy cane and the little branches on each side, but even that got easier over time.
I was running out of time to get them in the mail, so that's when I decided to visit my favorite quilt shop in town and buy one of their Christmas "charm packs". They were just the right size to use for the backing and I didn't have to measure and cut anything. See, I said I like things simple.
Since I got the batch of 11 in the mail, I've made 5 more of the candy canes. I think I have one more of those I want to make, and then I'll switch to the birds. I'll post a picture when I have one finished.
